Description: Ngā Hapū o Whangārei is an informal collective of the independent and interdependent mana whenua hapū of the wider Whangārei area who share the goal to grow their relationships with the schools and akonga of their respective rohe.

Tūhono ā Kura Vision:

Hapū are an essential part of the kura in their rohe, strengthening Te Tīriti o Waitangi into

the future.

This kaupapa, Tūhono a Kura was established in 2020 with a purpose to strengthen hapū and kura relationships for the benefit of the students in the wider Whangārei area from early childhood and kōhanga through to secondary school and tertiary. Ngā Hapū o Whangārei and Ministry of Education’s Toikuranui Investment Fund initially supported this kaupapa to provide Te Ao Māori Localised Curriculum learning resources, staff induction field trips to introduce the diverse whakapapa and cultural landscapes of their kura and relationship agreement templates for hapū to use in their relationships with kura.

Until July 2022, Tūhono ā Kura will include more experiences for hapū to offer kura and their teaching staff, with a focus on growing staff cultural competencies to apply in their kura including:

  • Mahi toi;

  • Te Ao Māori perspectives of wellbeing and cognitive development';

  • He Whakaputanga me Te Tīriti o Waitangi;

  • Te Taiao; and

  • Cultural narratives and histories of the Whangārei rohe.
