Description: Te Rarawa Tō Tātou Kāinga housing initiative was developed to help Te Rarawa whānau transition into home ownership. In stage one of the programme, 8 homes were purchased over 4 years. In stage two, Te Rarawa worked with local banks to provide low deposit home loans to Te Rarawa whānau, with 16 families purchasing their own homes in 2018.

Te Rarawa have a strong desire to assist more whānau into quality, healthy, affordable homes. An assessment of housing in Kaitaia revealed that much of the available stock is in a poor state of repair, with most existing homes requiring work to be done within the first 5 years. Stage three of the initiative will therefore see new housing developed for purchase by Te Rarawa whānau.

In 2019 Te Waka Pupuri Pūtea Trust purchased the site on Donald Rd, which had a previous (now lapsed) resource consent to subdivide into 66 residential sections.

The Donald Rd development represents stage three of the Te Rarawa Tō Tātou Kāinga initiative. The vision for the Donald Rd site is to:

Build new, warm, dry healthy homes
Build a community
Build houses to suit needs of whānau
Build affordable (up to $350k total cost), quality homes.

Our role in the project was as lead consultant (including project planning to support funding application to Te Puni Kōkiri and coordination of separate consultants), masterplan / subdivision plan (for 44 sections) & design of housing typologies (including workshop design and facilitation), through to preliminary design for RC. Additional services included development of housing needs survey.

The masterplan developed by Matakohe was progressed to an approved resource consent, however the client engaged local prefabricated housing suppliers for supply of the individual dwellings, including PanelLock Homes (video courtesy of PanelLock Homes).
